Torquay is known as the start of the Great Ocean Road and Victoria’s surf and beach lifestyle capital. Many world-famous surf companies, including Rip Curl and Quiksilver, are headquartered in Torquay. Surf Coast Plaza, as shopping and dining complex, also houses the Surf World Museum.
Every Easter, crowds flock to Bells Beach, Torquay’s most famous beach, to watch the world’s best surfers compete in the Rip Curl Pro, the world’s longest-running surf contest, which began in 1961.
Torquay’s surf and beach conditions make it an ideal place to learn to surf. Go Ride A Wave, Australia’s favourite surf school, established in 1987, runs surf lessons and hire in Torquay. The shop is the closest shop possible to the beach and has showers, toilet and change rooms, as well as rear wet entrance. Go Ride A Wave has a wide range of surf hire available, including a full range of surf learner “GBoards” and a full range of NSP hardboards designed for intermediate and advanced surfers. For cold weather and during winter, Go Ride A Wave also hires out warm winter 4/3 wetsuits.

Meet At Our Shop
Everyone should meet at our shop at least 15 minutes before the start time of your lesson. You will be provided with a full length Quiksilver wetsuit and a soft beginner surfboard and walk to the beach.
The lessons begin on the sand with a safety briefing and some basic instruction.
We conduct almost all our lessons in waist deep water and consequently this keeps it safe for everyone. After catching some waves we will return to the beach for more detailed instruction about how to stand up.
The rest of the lesson will be spent in the water with the instructor helping everyone to stand up on a wave.
